Create a safe place through coaching
As a leader, you are accustomed to driving accountability and results. For that reason, it can be difficult for them to step back and have confidence that the person they’re coaching will assume responsibility for finding their own way.
When a leader authentically “shows up” for the team — is present, nonjudgmental and willing to help — people are more willing to try new ideas, take risks and make changes. The fear of making a mistake and failing decreases while creative ideas and innovative action increases.
Resist the urge to give the answer, tell the team member how to do the job or to communicate — verbally or non-verbally – displeasure or negativity. Avoid the too-easy trap of saying “What I think you should do is …”. Or “Have you tried…?” Instead, use thoughtful questions, active listening and words of encouragement to help the person view the situation in a new way. This reduces the pressure and frees the person from the thought, “What process does my boss want me to use?”
By integrating coaching throughout your organization, innovative solutions and new ways of thinking will emerge.
